UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec

Last Updated: Jan 19, 2017 10:50AM CST
On a Linux/MacOS system you may encounter the following error:
UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters in position

To fix this you will need to set the following system variables from the terminal:

For bash:
export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8

export LANG=en_US.UTF-8

For these to be persistent you may need to add these to you ~/.bahsrc(Linux) or ~/.bash_profile(MacOS). Once you have added these lines you can then either launch a new terminal or run the following:
MacOS:
 source ~/.bash_profile
Linux:
 source ~/.bashrc

For csh:
setenv LANG en_US.UTF-8
setenv LC_ALL en_US.UTF-8

For these to be persistent you may want to add these to you ~/.csh(Linux/MacOS). You can then either launch a new terminal or run the following:
 source ~/.csh
